Derby Day: Time for a Mint Julep

Derby Day: Time for a Mint Julep

It’s Derby Day! That means it’s time to enjoy the iconic Mint Julep.

The Mint Julep became the official drink in the 1930 Derby when Churchill Downs started serving it in souvenir julep cups. Nearly 120,000 are expected to be served over Derby weekend, requiring 1,000 pounds of freshly harvested mint.

Until several years ago, Old Forester was the bourbon used in the Mint Julep. Now Woodford Reserve is used at the track. Here’s the official recipe from Churchill Downs:

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Woodford Reserve

  • 1/2 oz Simple syrup

  • 3 fresh mint leaves

  • Crushed ice

Preparation:

Express the essential oils in the mint and rub them inside the glass. To the same glass, add simple syrup, bourbon and crushed ice. Stir. Garnish with more ice and fresh mint.

Good luck!
