Steak & Bourbon at Jeff Ruby's before Mellencamp Concert
John Mellencamp recently came to Louisville for a concert. My beautiful wife and I enjoyed a pre-show dinner at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse. And as always Jeff Ruby’s didn’t disappoint in fun atmosphere, top notch service and the best steak in Derby City,
We sat at the bar where the bartender made every effort to get us in and out before the concert. She succeeded and did it without rushing our dinner. There was plenty of time to enjoy the fun and lively ambience of the bar. The pianist taking requests from us sitting around the bar even playing a Mellencamp song for us.
As I’ve said before, my favorite cocktail is the Old Fashioned. I ordered my usual with Woodford Rye. It was made right on the spot! I prefer the taste of Rye in my Old Fashioned.
I followed with a neat pour of Peerless Small Batch. It was my first time tasting this bottle. I found it to be a satisfying high quality bourbon. It’s a four year old whiskey bottled at barrel strength of 107 proof. It’s very smooth and great on the nose and the palate. I especially liked the spicy rye finish. Maybe that’s why it gets Bourbon Dad’s stamp of approval meaning I will add Peerless Small Batch to my personal bourbon collection.
I have to admit Jeff Ruby’s is one of our local favorites. I started with the shrimp cocktail. You won’t find a better raw bar in Louisville than the one at Jeff Ruby’s. Talk about jumbo shrimp!
My wife and I usually enjoy the filet when dining at Jeff Ruby’s. But this time we changed it up a bit by sharing the New York Strip. It was delicious. The Jeff Ruby’s legendary seasoning makes any cut mouth watering. We split the blue cheese wedge salad along with a side of the brussels sprouts.
We ended our dinner with the creme brûlée - one of my wife’s favorite desserts. She said it was perfect! And again, the bartender knew we were short on time. But the kitchen sent out the creme brûlée just in time of us to pay our check to walk down the street in plenty of time to see John Mellencamp take the stage.
